🔥 Fossil Fuel Displacement & Carbon Impact (Down South)

When grid bottlenecks force Scottish wind turbines off, fossil-fuel power plants down south must step in to meet electricity demand.

How Constraint Costs and BSUoS Charges Impact Your Energy Bill

Many consumers assume that multi-million-pound constraint payments made to wind farms are funded directly by government income taxes or corporate subsidies. In reality, these costs are recovered entirely through electricity bills via the Balancing Services Use of System (BSUoS) charges. Grid operators bill these expenses directly to energy suppliers and large industrial users, who pass them on to everyday households through higher unit electricity rates and standing charges.

This creates a financial and environmental double whammy for bill-payers. First, consumers fund the constraint payouts required to switch off clean Scottish wind generation when transmission lines are congested. Second, because local renewable power is blocked from reaching major demand centers, expensive fossil-fuel power plants (CCGT) down south must ramp up to fill the deficit. This drives up wholesale energy prices further and generates preventable carbon emissions, meaning consumers pay more out of pocket while achieving lower carbon reductions.
